On the first day of Christmas…

Forget gold rings and partridges in pear trees. We all know that what everyone really wants for Christmas is some intellectual property! So come with us as we send you twelve of the best juletime patent applications we could find.

1. Rotatable luminous Christmas tree (CN 2446907 Y)

Artificial Christmas trees are becoming more and more common. They can be found in all sorts of shapes and sizes, and some even come with integrated lights. Back in the year 2000, though, one pioneering inventor took things one step further with their rotatable luminous Christmas tree. The tree includes fibre optics to put on a light show as the whole tree rotates on its base. We can’t help but feel that more than three branches may have added a little more Christmas cheer though.

2. Christmas tree-top ornament (US 4339787 A)

Of course, what Christmas tree is complete without an ornament taking pride of place at the top of the tree? Back in 1980, an inventor in the US devised this “particularly striking” star which “provides a most unusual tunnel-light decoration” for “maximum decorative impact”. Anyone who has seen our Christmas tree will know that we always aim for maximum decorative impact.

3. Holographic Christmas tree (US 11439263 B1)

But what about those people who want all the fun and decorative impact of a Christmas tree without the hassle of decorating it, and finding somewhere to store all the decorations when the New Year comes? Fear not! Holographic Christmas trees are on the scene. A projector in the base means that a fully decorated Christmas tree can be yours at the press of a button – your choice of fir, pine, spruce, cypress or cedar.

4. Christmas tree bag (US 9578814 B2)

If you prefer the experience of a real tree, then there’s always one problem to contend with: how do you get it home without ending up with a car full of needles and without damaging the tree? An inventor in the US state of Pennsylvania has you covered with the Christmas tree bag. Simply wrap your chosen tree in the bag, strap it to the roof of your car, and it’ll arrive in your living room in pristine condition.

5. Christmas tree with flying snow (CN 2321335 Y)

It goes without saying that no Christmas is complete without snow, but that’s difficult to achieve when your Christmas tree is indoors. Let me introduce you to the ingenious Christmas tree with flying snow. The tree has a hollow trunk and sits in a pool of fake snowflakes. A blower in the base fires snowflakes up through the trunk, where they emerge from the top of the tree and create a snowing effect, gently falling back down to begin the cycle again.

6. Bauble with loudspeaker (GB 2208028 A)

While Christmas trees are always visually impressive, they’re often rather quiet on their own. For those who prefer their Christmas with sound, the inspired Christmas bauble with loudspeaker has you covered. Powered by a solar cell, the bauble “will play its tune whenever light falls upon it” or until its battery discharges. A switch to silence the cheerful tunes is merely an optional extra.

7. Fire extinguisher device for Christmas trees (GB 988429 A)

With all these lights and electronic gadgets adorning our Christmas trees, one might start to wonder about safety. Such concerns were also on the mind of a Canadian inventor in 1963. A high pressure gas canister and a reservoir of fire-fighting foam are neatly concealed within an angelic ornament, keeping watch from the top of your tree.

8. Musical Christmas card (GB 190604194 A)

If the musical bauble isn’t to your taste, perhaps you would prefer to receive a musical Christmas card instead? While electronic versions seem to have had their day, did you know that musical Christmas cards have actually been around for over 100 years – no batteries required? In 1906, a British inventor devised a Christmas card with reeds inside. Opening the card pulled a slide over the reeds, producing musical notes or the sound of chiming Christmas bells.

9. Edible gift-wrap for pets (US 2013/0149418 A1)

Gifts are a big part of Christmas, but our furry friends are often left out. Thankfully, a creative inventor in the US has devised some edible wrapping paper for pets which provides “an edible puzzle that the pet must chew through in order to reach the hidden gift surprise.” This is also the first time we have ever seen gift wrap described as having a “varied chewing experience in both texture and flavor.” Delicious!

10. Santa Claus detector (US 5523741 A)

When the big day finally arrives, every child is excited for the arrival of Santa Claus. I’m sure most kids have also wondered about catching him in the act of delivering their gifts. Thankfully, you don’t need to stay awake all night waiting – the Santa Claus detector can do the hard work for you! With lights and a music generator triggered by Santa’s arrival, finally we will have proof that Santa Claus exists.

11.Snowman mould (US 5632926 A)

When the snow does arrive, a friendly snowman can help to greet visitors to your home. If, like us, your snowmen never turn out quite the right shape then you need a helpful snowman mould! Simply fill the mould with fresh snow, open the doors, and voila! An instant perfect snowman every time.

12. Automatic snowball making and throwing machine (CN 105771282 A)

Finally, a friendly snowball fight can be fun around Christmas. But what if you simply can’t compete with your friends’ superior snowball throwing skills? Shaoxing University has you covered with the automatic snowball making and throwing machine! Domination on the snowy battlefield, and you don’t even need to get your hands cold!

As we unwrap these twelve festive patent applications, it becomes clear that the holiday season has a unique way of encouraging playful thinking and unexpected ideas.
