UKIPO fees expected to rise from April 2026

News

15 December 2025

The UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) has announced significant fee increases effective from 1 April 2026, subject to Parliamentary approval. The increases, averaging around 25%, will apply across patents, trademarks and registered designs.

Having kept its fees unchanged for many years, the UKIPO now considers an increase in patent, trademark and design fees necessary due to inflationary pressures, sustainability and the need to maintain service quality. In fact, trademark fees have remained unchanged since 1998.

What does this mean for you?

For rights holders, this means it may be worth reviewing your IP strategy now, to assess whether there are matters that should be considered and, where appropriate, addressed before the new fees take effect.

This is especially relevant for those considering:

  • new filings

  • renewal of existing rights

  • recordals/ownership changes

  • opposition or cancellation actions

Early planning could help you take advantage of the current fee levels before the increases take effect.
