A Swiss type claim is used for patenting pharmaceuticals. Under Norwegian law, patent protection is not allowed for therapeutic methods for preventing or curing diseases in humans and animals. When known preparations turn out to have new, surprising effects in the treatment of diseases, a Swiss type claim could be used. Swiss type claims may take various forms, but could typically be: ”Use of [a known compound] for the manufacture of a pharmaceutical composition for the treatment of [a specific medical condition]”.
