How much does it cost to file a patent application in Norway?

The cost of preparing a patent application varies according to the complexity of the subject. The final cost depends on the number of hours spent processing the application before it is ready to be filed.

The average price is currently about NOK 30,000 + public fees + VAT. In addition, there may be extra costs incurred for having the text of the application translated into Norwegian. Please note that companies with up to 20 employees pay a smaller fee than larger organisations.

For an application forming the basis of priority or an international application with up to 10 (ten) claims to be carried forward in Norway, the cost is approx. NOK 7,000 + public fees. In addition to this there will be costs in connection with a translation of the application document into Norwegian and also costs for claiming priority. Please note that there will be both public fees and agency fees for each claim in excess of 10.

The handling of the application during the processing period (replying to official statements) greatly depends on what the patent authorities' examiner finds. A minimum average of NOK 12,000 should be expected for this work.

There is no examination fee payable to Norwegian patent authorities.

Upon granting of a patent, final costs of approx. NOK 10,000 will be due (covering preparation of documents for printing, printing fees etc.).
